Here are some of Abby’s all-time favorite recommended reads. What do they have in common? That blend of humor and emotion that has the reader laughing and crying….
Contemporary Romance
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is hard—make that impossible—to beat! Her blend of comedy, deep emotion and great story-telling make her a stand-out writer. This Heart of Mine and Nobody’s Baby But Mine are both a lot of fun and have great family subplots. Match Me If You Can, is also fabulous, a contender for best-of-the-best. Try Kiss an Angel for a story that is a bit different from Susan’s other work, and which will produce tears as often as laughter.
And another Susan… Susan Mallery delivers fun, quirky comedies, such as Falling for Gracie, whose first chapter has one of those scenes that makes you laugh out loud and cringe at the same time, as you think, “I could have done something that embarrassing, back when I was single.” In fact, now that I think about it, I did exactly that…and just like Gracie, I got the guy in the end! Susan Mallery’s series romances for Silhouette Special Edition are also excellent.
For romantic comedy, Jennifer Crusie’s Man-Hunting and Bet Me.
Chick Lit
Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series is hilarious, and her heroine is so likable, a factor sometimes overlooked in chick lit. She’s managed to keep the characters fresh in her latest in the series, Shopaholic and Baby.
Historical Romance
To be honest, Abby’s more of a contemporary gal, but one or two historical names make her top picks. Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm is intensely romantic and probably unlike any other romance you’ve read.
Just about anything by Stephanie Laurens, the mistress of regency romances, is a good bet for a light tone, nice humor and that all-important regency “feel”. And of course, for traditional regencies, Georgette Heyer is, to use one of her words, a nonpareil—unequaled.
Inspirational Romance
Brenda Coulter still ranks as my number one inspirational author. I recently read her new book, A Season of Forgiveness, and it was right up there with my other favorites.
